DOGWOODS BARTO TAKES ALLOWANCE AT OAKLAWN FOR THIRD WIN

Making his first start of the year, the 3-year-old DOGWOODS BARTO mowed down the leader inside the sixteenth pole to take this one mile allowance test at Oaklawn Park by one length. The son of LATENT HEAT, who sired 14 first crop 2-year-old winners in 2011, won his debut at Churchill and also took a six-furlong race on Keeneland’s polytrack. Bred in Kentucky by Jane Parrott & Dogwood Farms, he has now won three of five starts for owner Midwest Thoroughbreds, Inc., and trainer Brad H. Cox.

NEW STAKES HORSE FOR LATENT HEAT

CIGUARAYA, a 3-year-old filly from the first crop of LATENT HEAT, earned her first black type when she placed in the seven-furlong Gasparilla S. at Tampa Bay Downs on January 14. The $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July 2010 Sale graduate, making her stakes debut, was never more than 1 1/2 lengths behind the leaders throughout and continued to run well down the lane to finish less than two lengths behind the winner. In November, the filly won her debut, a Maiden Special Weight at Calder by three lengths.

TWO NEW WINNERS IN TWO DAYS FOR LATENT HEAT

PROMESSA DOCE, a 3-year-old filly by LATENT HEAT, gave her sire 17 winners in his first crop to race when she won a 5 1/2-furlong Maiden race at Laurel on January 14. Making only her second career start, she raced off the pace early on, but closed steadily and went by the leader to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Bred in Kentucky by Upson Downs Farm, the filly is out of the stakes-placed Press Card mare, Miss Quote.
The day before at Tampa Bay, PACK ATTACK, a 3-year-old filly, who was runner-up in her last two starts, ran down the leaders in the stretch to win this 6 1/2-furlong Maiden test. She is out of the allowance-winning Honour and Glory mare, Glacial Victoire and was bred in Kentucky by Walts-David Stable.

15TH FIRST CROP WINNER FOR LATENT HEAT

HOT DIXIE, a 3-year-old filly making her second career start, won this six-furlong Maiden Special Weight on the all-weather track at Golden Gate Fields on New Year’s Day. Having finished in the runner-up spot only a length back in her debut, the filly settled early in third position, commenced her drive heading into the stretch and pulled away to win by three lengths.
Out of the Dixieland Band mare, Dixieland Briar, she was bred in Kentucky by Kensington Stables LLC and races for her trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, and co-owners Green Smith & Dr. George Todaro.

FOURTEEN 1ST CROP WINNERS FOR LATENT HEAT IN 2011

LATENT RUSH, a 2-year-old colt by LATENT HEAT, made his third start a winning one taking a six-furlong Maiden Special Weight at Hawthorne on the final day of 2011. First out of the gate from post eight, he prompted the pace for the first part of the race, took a narrow lead in the turn, then battled to the wire to win by a head. This gives his Freshman sire a total of 14 first crop 2-year-old winners for the year.
Bred in Kentucky by Liberation Farm & Brandywine Farm and owned and trained by Brian La Mew, LATENT RUSH is out of the Danzig mare, Legion of Merit.

INTERNATIONAL 1ST CROP 2YO WINNERS FOR LATENT HEAT

Malibu S.-G1 winner and Freshman sire LATENT HEAT was represented by two 2-year-old winners in Korea recently. BAEGEOGI, a 2-year-old filly out of the Formal Gold mare, Relaxing Green, and JAPJIMA, a 2-year-old colt out of the Wild Gale mare, Imp’s Wild, both won in their first two starts. The two juveniles were purchased out of the 2011 OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training by K.O.I.D. Co. Ltd., the second leading buyer of the April sale.

WINNER #11 FOR 1ST CROP 2YO SIRE LATENT HEAT

EYESEEYOU, a 2-year-old colt by Freshman sire LATENT HEAT, was an impressive winner taking a six-furlong maiden race at Churchill Downs on November 27. His sire’s ELEVEN winner from his first crop, this Woodbine shipper vied for the lead three wide after breaking from post 10, took the lead near the top of the stretch, then opened up on the field to win going away by six lengths.
Out of the Gentlemen (ARG) mare Jump Jivin Jade, the colt was bred in Kentucky by C. Kidder, J. K. Griggs & Linda Griggs, races for Charles Kidder and is trained by Steve Asmussen.

STRONG SALES IN BOOK 1 OF KEENELAND SEPTEMBER

WOODS EDGE certainly saw fantastic results during the Select portion of the Keeneland September Sale on both September 11 and 12. The highest priced filly from the first day of the sale was Hip 83, a yearling filly by Indian Charlie out of the multiple graded stakes winning mare Lu Ravi, who sold for a very strong $775,000 to Besilu Stables. Also sold on day one was Hip 3, a Tapit colt out of graded stakes winner Rite Moment who sold for $280,000 to Shadwell Estate Company, Ltd.
On the second day of the select session the single yearling offered by WOODS EDGE was Hip 195, a Bernardini filly out of Miss Audrey. The beautiful yearling reached a high price of $500,000, sold to Stonestreet Stables and George B. Bolton, owners of Horse of the Year Curlin.
WOODS EDGE FARM as consignor averaged $518,333 from three yearlings offered during book one - the second highest average of all consignors for the two days.

2YO FILLY FOMO GIVES LATENT HEAT SEVEN 1ST CROP WINNERS

FOMO, a 2-year-old filly from the first crop of Grade 1 winner LATENT HEAT, won a six-furlong Maiden race on September 10, the first Saturday of Turfway Park’s fall meet. Making only her third career start, the seventh winner for her sire quickly gained the advantage after the break, sprinted clear to lead by as many as seven lengths, then cruised home to win by a length.
Bred in Kentucky for owner/breeder Kildare Stud, the filly out of the Notebook mare, Dusty’s Lil Book, is trained by Ronny Werner.

:22 2/5 and :45 4/5, was five lengths in front at the top of the stretch and continued on under a hand ride to win by 3 3/4 lengths.

HOT LADY, a 2-year-old filly by LATENT HEAT, inched clear in the final strides to win this 4 1/2-furlong Maiden race at Parx Racing on July 26. Making her racing debut, the 5th winner for her sire pressured the pace early on, took the lead at the top of the stretch and prevailed by a length.

LATENT HEAT’S 2YO FILLY TRUE FEELINGS RUNNERUP IN SARATOGA’S SCHUYLERVILLE-G3

TRUE FEELINGS, a 2-year-old filly by Freshman sire LATENT HEAT, put in a solid effort in only her second career start to be runnerup in Saratoga’s Grade 3 Schuylerville S. on July 22, the opening day of the 2011 meet. Unhurried from the gate, the $150,000 Keeneland 2010 September Sales grad began to pick up the pace in midturn, was fanned five wide coming out of the turn, but got straightened out and put in a charge through the stretch to finish second only 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner. It was nearly six lengths back to the third-place filly.
In her career debut, TRUE FEELINGS easily won a Maiden Special Weight by
3 3/4 lengths at Delaware on June 27. Bred in Kentucky by Liberation Farm & Brandywine Farm, the daughter of LATENT HEAT is owned by Michael Dubb, Bethlehem Stables, The Elkstone Group & Charles Zackney and trained by

SOFTLY LIT, a 2-year-old filly by 1st crop sire LATENT HEAT, won the 5 1/2-furlong Tippett S. on the turf at Colonial Downs on July 16. Settling off the pace while saving ground around the turn, the 1st stakes winner for her sire was 3 1/2 lengths in front at the top of the stretch and got to the wire first in her turf debut. Only six days earlier, she had broken her maiden impressively going wire-to-wire to win by 4 1/2 lengths on the dirt at Delaware Park.

LATENT HEAT, won a 4 1/2-furlong Maiden Special Weight at Calder on June 11. Making her racing debut, the 1st starter and 1st winner for her sire sat in stalking position on the rail, swung outside the leaders at the top of the stretched, then out-dueld the favorite to the wire.
Bred by in Florida Susan Kahn, this gutsy filly races for Starship Stables and is trained by Steven Dwoskin.
